Summer fun in Downham, Bellingham, Whitefoot and Grove Park

Come rain or shine there is so much to do for children, families, young people and adults this summer! From cooking to composting, duckling adventures to diving, street dance to street chance cricket, arts and crafts, theatre, summer uni and trips to the cinema, seaside and skiing - to name but a few!

Let those fingers do the walking and get a fun packed summer organised! Many activities are low cost or free.  

LATEST: Sage Educational Trust are running a free bicycle project with Young Lewisham (Forest Hill) on Tuesday 24^th July 11am to 3pm for anyone ages 8-16. A bus will be picking up from New Cross Gate Sainsbury’s at 10:30am and from Bromley Road Retail Park at 10:30am to take children there should people require transport. Presented by Downham Nutrition Partnership and Delicious Nutritious UK with funding from Whitefoot Assembly

The last series was a great success ~ over subscribed and with outstanding feedback. Everyone agreed that the food we prepared was delicious (as well as being healthy) and they enjoyed the lovely, friendly atmoshere. We will discuss how as individuals we evolve, so do our eating habits and recipe; what time has brought to the kitchen: ingredients, special diets.

There are two series, both on a Tuesday, at different venues. You are welcome to join any session, please book beforehand.

Love Food Hate Waste workshops start 25 July

We waste a staggering amount of food in this country, due to confusion over date labels, buying too much and not using cooked or uncooked food in creative ways. It’s best to book so you don’t miss out, but if you haven’t booked you’re welcome to see if there’s space to join us on the day.

Local Assembly Funds 2012-13 for Downham and Whitefoot

What are local assemblies?

Local assemblies are open meetings where you and others decide how to improve your area. Lewisham was the first local authority to establish local assemblies. What's the best way to find out about and contribute to your area? Go along to your local assembly meeting! Details of local assemblies including the dates of the meetings can be found on the Lewisham Council website.

Where is your local assembly?

To find out which ward and assembly you belong to, type in your postcode in the find your councillor search on the Lewisham Council website.

Do you want to know if you are in Downham or Whitefoot ward? Wards are electoral boundaries for local authorities. In urban areas the wards within a local authority area generally contain roughly the same number of electors and elect three councillors.

What about funding?

This year's Downham and Whitefoot Assembly Funds stand at £18,750 each 

£3,750 will be on Councillors recommendations 

The remaining £15,000 will be allocated to groups who can apply for funding.

For 2012-13, the funding will be allocated as follows:

• 2 projects to be capped at £4,000
• 4 amounts of up to £500 seed funding for first time projects
• Remaining projects will be capped at £2,000

Groups who apply for funding have to demonstrate that they meet one or more of the assembly priorities for their area.

Assembly priorities
Each assembly has a set of priorities which have been agreed are most important to their area, through assembly meetings and outreach to local groups and individuals.

Downham

• antisocial behaviour
• youth provision
• environment
• provision for the elderly
• adult education

Whitefoot 

• crime and anti-social behaviour                                
• lack of community facilities       
• activities for young people        
• roads and traffic       
• lack of community spirit

Bugsy Malone at Goldsmiths Community Centre - this weekend!

Rehearsing for Bugsy Malone in the George Green Hall

BUGSY MALONE is being performed by the Junior Musical Theatre group with support from the Grade 2 ballet class of the Goldsmiths Dance Academy. Performances are this Saturday 14th July at 6.30pm and Sunday 15th July at 5.30pm in the George Green Hall, Goldsmiths Community Centre, Castillon Road, SE6 1QD [map]

Tickets are £5 in advance, £6 on the door for adults and £3 advance, £3.50 on the door for children/concessions. A family ticket for £15 admits two adults and up to three children and can be bought in advance only.

What does this buy you? An evening's entertainment in an atmospheric community theatre built in 1939, in a cabaret setting with table service for soft drinks and snacks. You are welcome to bring your own wine (glasses provided). Donations towards corkage are very welcome too!

Tickets are still available for Saturday and Sunday- we will allocate tables in order of ticket purchase so get your choice of seating by buying your tickets early! Where from?

Polish children poetry recital

 

Poems are reproduced here with kind permission from Eliza Jedruszak. The poems we were performing are both by Jan Brzechwa- Polish author very well known for his poems for children (1900-1966). First one is called "Leń" (Lazy bones) and second "Ryby, Żaby i Raki" (Fish, Frogs and Crabs) 

LEŃ

Na tapczanie siedzi leń,
Nic nie robi cały dzień.
"O, wypraszam to sobie!
Jak to? Ja nic nie rozbię?
A kto siedzi na tapczanie?
A kto zjadł pierwsze śniadanie?
A kto dzisiaj pluł i łapał?
A kto się w głowę podrapał?
A kto dziś zgubił kalosze?
O - o! Proszę!" 

Na tapczanie siedzi leń,
Nic nie robi cały dzień.
"Przepraszam! A tranu nie piłem?
A uszu dzisiaj nie myłem?
A nie urwałem guzika?
A nie pokazałem języka?
